Chapter 17

I didn’t sleep very well and judging by how restless Jack had been in the night, I’m pretty sure he didn’t fare much better. I had no idea how Florence would react when I told her about CASS; I wasn’t even sure that telling her was the right thing to do. We were her parents, and she was only five. Shouldn’t we be making those kinds of decisions for her?

I glanced at the alarm clock; it was a few minutes after six.

“Jack, wake up.”

“I’m not asleep.”

We both sat up in bed.

“I’m having second thoughts about this CASS thing,” I said.

“I’ve had second, third and fourth thoughts, and I’m still none the wiser.”

“Florence is too young to place this decision on her shoulders.”

“I agree, but I don’t think that’s what we’re doing.”

“What do you mean?”

“That first we have to decide if her going to CASS is even on the table. If we don’t think it’s right for her, then we shouldn’t even mention it to Florence. On the other hand, if we don’t think it would be such a bad idea, then I don’t see the problem with letting her decide. So, do we think letting her go to CASS would be so terrible?”

“You’re so wise sometimes,” I said.

“I’ve been telling you that for years.”

“CASS isn’t a bad place. I wouldn’t have worked there if it was.”

“What about all those dragons you told me about? And the airship?”

“Florence wouldn’t need to use the airship. She’s already powerful enough to magic herself back and forth between here and there.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Pretty sure, but if she isn’t, that’s an end to it anyway. There’s no way she’s going to do a return journey on the airship three days a week. And, as for the dragons, I’m not too worried about those. CASS’s defences aren’t foolproof, but they’re pretty reliable, and I know they’ve beefed them up substantially since the pouchfeeder incident.”

“How will she get along with children older than her?” Jack posed a good question. “There won’t be any other five-year-olds there.”

“You’re right. She’ll be the youngest by some years, but then you saw how she got along with Lizzie at the weekend.”

“That’s true. Do we think she’d be able to handle the workload? It’s a lot to ask of someone so young.”

“If Florence enjoys the work, then I don’t think there’ll be an issue. You’ve seen how she’s taken to magic.”

“What about you, Jill? What are your concerns?”

“You’ve covered the main ones.”

“So where does that leave us?”

“We haven’t really come up with a good reason not to put it to her, have we?”

“Not really.” Jack sighed. “I was kind of hoping we would.”

“You do realise we could be stressing out over nothing. She might turn around and say: more school? No thanks.”

“Yeah, you’re right. She might be horrified at the idea. So, what are we going to do?”

“I don’t think we have a choice,” I said. “If we don’t tell her, you can bet Grandma will make sure Florence finds out anyway, and that will put us in an even worse position.
